Real World Dog Training in Richmond
What does “Dog Training for the Real World” mean? It means that the professional dog trainers in our dog trainer network do much more than teach simple obedience commands; though reliable obedience is the way your dog learns how to get along in the real world. A world filled with other dogs, cars, kids, bicycles & skateboards, people that want to say hello, and every other distraction (and temptation) you can imagine. I offer real world dog training in Richmond, and the surrounding area.

When your dog is reliable we increase the distraction level!
To teach your dog to get along in this distraction-filled environment, our Richmond dog trainers employ a protocol that begins in the home, away from distractions. This seems counter-productive, doesn’t it? If we want our dog to be okay when skateboards approach, or when encountering new dogs, wouldn’t it seem like it would make the most sense to bring our dog around these distractions as much as possible? No, because in reality, this approach is actually the most counter-productive. Until we can teach our dog what we expect from him, both around, and away from distractions, it wouldn’t be very fair to immediately expose him to these things and expect him to intuitively know how to handle them. Remember when you learned how to drive? Was it in a large parking lot, or quiet street? If the person who taught you how to drive immediately took you out on the freeway right after being shown how to start the car, I would guess you’d have a pretty slim chance of being a very good driver, let alone enjoying driving at all!
It’s the same thing with your dog. Trying to get his attention and teach him what you expect from him when he’s fully distracted, or afraid, or acting aggressively towards another dog, is just like you learning to drive on the freeway. This is why we teach your dog to be reliable with all of his basic dog training commands at your home, where he’s the least distracted, and most comfortable.
We also always begin our dog-training program with an extremely comprehensive behavior consultation. In addition to getting to know your dog, and assessing his temperament and personality, we talk with you not only at length about any issues that you want to address, and your training goals, but also about you and your family’s lifestyle and how you’d like your dog to fit into your life. We have a dog training protocol that we like to follow, with expected outcomes for each time we meet with you, but we also tailor our approach and goals to match your overall goals with your dog.

Visiting the skate park
Once we have achieved very good focus and obedience, typically after just a few sessions, the training moves to a distracting where we work with you and your dog in situations that you’re most likely to encounter in the “real world”. If your lifestyle involves going to the beach, we would likely work with you in this environment to teach you how to maintain your dog’s focus and attention around the distractions you’d encounter there. If you envision taking your dog to your kid’s soccer games, we might work with you in this kind of environment as well, to make sure your dog is as solid there as he is when he’s not distracted. This is what “Dog Training for the Real World” means to us!
