Teaching Older Dogs New Tricks!
I always say it’s best to train dogs as early as possible. If you get a puppy, enroll them in a training program. If you get a dog at a year old, enroll them in a training program. It’s always easiest to instill boundaries and good behavior in your dog early on, but this isn’t to say old dogs can’t be taught new tricks because they can.
Whether your older dog has developed a new behavior problem in middle to old age, you’ve always had trouble getting a certain bad habit of theirs under control, or you’ve recently adopted an older dog, my in-home training program can help. In older dogs, especially, any new behavioral issues should be brought to a vet first, just to be sure there isn’t an underlying health concern, but if your dog’s been cleared, let’s tackle this together.
A benefit of my in-home training program is that you and your dog receive one on one attention. I can mold the program to fit your specific training goals and the age, size, temperament, and abilities of your dog. Depending on the behavioral concern, your program may include basic obedience training, proper leash handling techniques, crate training, structured scheduling, elimination of roaming, and/or place training, among others.
Don’t doubt the ability of your older dog to respect new boundaries. Just a few weeks ago, I was able to help a couple who had adopted an eight-year-old dog named Zing. He was appropriately named because even at eight, he was incredibly hyperactive. But I was able to come into their home, get to know Zing, and design a training program that worked for him. Now, thanks to plenty of exercise, place training, and basic obedience training, Zing and his owners are able to enjoy a calm, quiet evening together. Zing was perfectly able to learn this alternative behavior despite the fact he’d been bouncing off the walls for eight years of his life.
